Mercy Maternity Clinic

I had the priviledge of visiting the Mercy Maternity Clinic this week. Such a ministry right in the heart of Davao! The birthing clinic is run by local missionaries who help subsidize the cost of having a baby with other fund raising avenues. Filipinos can come to this clinic and have their baby for as little as a few dollars which is a huge blessing! The clinic is run by a few registered midwifes and 10 to 12 foreign (mainly US) students, training to become midwifes. These girls are students at New Life International School of Midwifery, and work at Mercy Maternity for their schooling practice! It's a wonderful system! It runs the clinic, gives girls a degree, and gives the girls first hand experience overseas! Perfect idea! It was such a blessing for me to see the clinic in action, meeting a few brand-new babies and most of the students. I was even invited to come back and assist in a birth! I'll keep you updated on that one. The clinic serves about 20,000 patients annually, delivering about 1,500 babies! The day I was there, three babies had already been born and one lady was walking around waiting. Of the babies born that day, only one was still there, and they left before I did, six hours after giving birth! The women here are incredible! Six hours after giving birth, I watched this lady walk down the street away from the clinic carrying her baby in her arms. This is truly an incredible ministry! The girls/ladies working here show every patient God's love and care and pray with them each visit. So amazing. Click on the title "Mercy Maternity Clinic" to visit their website!

    Wow Alanna,
I can't believe it - the world gets smaller and smaller - I know 2 of the students at New Life. If you get back there, please say Hello to Bethany who is a Wycliffe mk from PNG and Mary from Michigan who we knew in Australia. Three very special young ladies from 3 very distinct areas of my life. Neil and I are praying for you and so excited to hear news of your time in our beloved Philippines.
    love,
    Becky D
